Historical Research Project of the Former Zhejiang Customs
The Zhejiang (Ningpo) Customs was established in 1685 and it was one of the earliest four major customs offices founded in China.
Later in 1861, with the approval of the Qing government, a new customs office was established in Ningbo. It was controlled by foreigners until the People's Republic of China, which is why it's also referred to as the “Century Foreign Customs." The old site of the customs office, which is now a museum, is located on the old Bund on the north bank of the Yong River in Ningbo. It is the oldest existing customs building in China.
Project Achievement
The Document Collection Project of the Site Museum of the Former Zhejiang Customs was the first research project in China to collect and compile modern Chinese and English digital historical materials for this customs office. The project has collected valuable resources from renowned institutions such as The Second Historical Archives of China and US National Archives. Its information sources include important newspapers and periodicals in China and abroad, such as North China Daily News, Times and The Standard, covering more than ten types of materials such as news, documents, letters, telegrams and communications.
Processing these original materials proved challenging due to ancient Chinese formatting, Wade-Giles romanisation, and unique terminology. Nevertheless, after two years of processing thousands of documents totaling nearly 2GB, the project team has successfully compiled the first-ever set of Chinese and English historical materials on Zhejiang Customs. The two final volumes of the project present these materials in a researcher-friendly format. They are categorised by publication date and source, and the original texts are both transcribed and translated, greatly improving readability. The complete collection spans over a century (1833-1948) and comprises more than 100,000 edited words on 587 pages.
